Unlike traditional ads where you are paid for impressions or clicks, affiliates are only paid when/if a specific action is performed. The action might be a purchase or signing up for a newsletter, but regardless, you are not paid until you've compelled your readers to act.
With that in mind, here are the Top 10 Commandments for affiliate marketing success.
1. Know Your Audience
The most successful way to use affiliate programs is to anticipate and meet the needs of your readers. Consider why they are coming to your site. What are you providing that they are looking for? Make sure the affiliate products you are promoting provide a solution to your audience's problems.
If you are writing about sports, don't put up affiliate ads for printer toner just because everyone has a printer and those programs have a high payout. The people who are coming to read commentary or get stats for their favorite teams aren't thinking about those things when they're on your site.
The more relevant the ads are to your readers, the more likely they will use them.

Ti p# 6 Now THAT'S what I call a review
By far the best way to promote a product is to provide a review which clearly shows that you have read it, in the case of a book, or used it if it is a software tool.

A new book landed on my desk this week with a thud. Well I know that ebooks can't make a sound so we'll call it an e-thud. It's an epic, two years in the making - a bit like Ben Hur.I've only reviewed a few books before in my newsletter and when I saw the title 'Web Design Mastery' I expected to see the usual chapters about HTML code.
Well they were certainly there . . . along with Javascript, Cascading style sheets, advanced forms, graphics, web hosting, search engine optimization, credit card processing, autoresponders, website promotion, writing sales copy, ezine publishing, ebook creation, lots more... and that was just Volume 1 !
In Volume 2 we have advanced web design with chapters on templates, email forms and topics I am completely unfamiliar with such as image rollover and image dicing.

Tip # 5 Never link direct to an affiliate site
You should never openly use the URL that an affiliate program provides for you.
You should link instead to a page on your own site which then leads to the affiliate program.
The reasons ?
1. On this page you can provide your own introduction to the product or service you are promoting. This can include, for example:
- additional detail not available in your posting or advert- your own personal experience- a review of the benefits
2. You can provide links to the rest of your site in case your visitor is not interested in that affiliate product.
3. Your own site traffic statistics will indicate the response to your advert in addition to any stats provided for you by the affiliate company.
4. You can submit the page to search engines.

As an affiliate you want the visitor to read through the sales page and hit that order button with you getting credit for the sale. There are a number of reasons why this does not happen

Hello my name is Linda McRae, I started looking for opportunities to make money on the internet a little over four years ago when my company went out of business and I lost my job. As affiliate marketers we seem to always be in a hurry to get paid. Sometimes it is out of necessity, but more often than not we need to “feel” appreciated for our affiliate success. That’s why many new marketers are so interested in affiliate programs that pay via PayPal. Personally, as long as I can find a reliable affiliate program that pays on time, however they choose to pay me, is all that really matters to me.
But for those of you who are desperately seeking affiliate programs that use PayPal as a funding option, I have a great link for you. 13. Link to hidden pages on your autoresponder. For example, a hidden page could be your affiliate page that contains graphics, promotional articles, and text links that interested affiliates can make use of. Inform visitors that they may have free access to your affiliate page by simply requesting your autoresponder. You will then gather a list of visitors who may be interested in becoming your affiliates.
14. Use an autoresponder on your order page. Post a request form for visitors to be notified of special offers or discounts in the future. This creates a very effective mailing list that contains the names of people who are already your customers.
15. Put your links page on your autoresponder. It should contain up to fifty links that would be of particular interest to your visitors. Make sure to add your own promotional copy at the top or bottom of this page.
